Happiness (Why the BlueBird)

Are you familiar with “the bluebird of happiness”? Most people “of a certain age” are. But if you haven’t (congratulations on being young), here’s a little about our namesake:

For centuries and across numerous cultures, the bluebird has been a harbinger of good fortune and happiness. His happy song, audacious coat, and bouncy gait will bring a smile to anyone he visits. There are old sayings…“May the Bluebird of Happiness perch upon your shoulder!” (or “follow you around all day.”)

September 24, is National Bluebird of Happiness Day (that’s real! Expect a blowout!
The BlueBird (the café, that is) is a modern, bright, and happy space filled with light from the soaring 25-foot windows. The mood is comfortable and convivial. We hope that when our guests enjoy a meal, they’ll remember that it was the BlueBird that brought them such happiness.

About Us

Owner, Dan Butler

Chef Dan Butler is a Wilmington guy whose first job as a dishwasher at the Hotel DuPont (located a few blocks from the BlueBird) set him on a path to becoming one of the area’s most recognized and respected chef/restaurateurs. His restaurants have been a significant part of the area’s restaurant scene for more than 30 years.

A Culinary Institute of America grad, Dan learned his craft in high profile kitchens in New York, Washington DC, Switzerland, Miami and Tampa. He brought his big city experience and contemporary sensibilities to his restaurants and his cuisine. He carries on this big city theme in décor and menu in his latest endeavor, the BlueBird.

Managing Partner, Brian Walsh

Brian Walsh takes the term “hospitality” quite literally. Brian is a Wilmington native who has worked in the hospitality industry for years. His 12 year tenure at Toscana began as a server and included bartending and managing the restaurant’s staff.

Brian’s goal is to get to know every customer who comes in the door at the BlueBird. He wants people to feel about the BlueBird the way they felt about “Cheers”, although that show was long before his time.
